Description
This turquoise and opal pendant with apatite is from the Opulence Collection. The framework and chain of the piece are made from Sterling silver with a dark patina applied to the surface. The binding and weaving to set the stones are done with fine silver without a patina in order add more color contrast. The stones included in this pendant are turquoise, apatite and Ethiopian opal.
Details
This pendant is about 22 mm tall (7/8 inch) and 21 mm wide (7/8 inch) at the widest point. It is attached to an 18 inch oxidized silver cable chain.
Turquoise
Turquoise is a form of hydrated copper and aluminum phosphate. It tends to form in dry desert areas deep underground. Turquoise has been a part of human adornment for thousands of years. Archeological evidence suggests that Chinese artisans were carving it as long ago as 3000 years or more. Also, it is a birthstone for the month of December.

Apatite
Apatite is a widely occurring green mineral, consisting of calcium phosphate with some fluorine, chlorine, and other elements. I chose to use it in this design for it’s attractive bright green color.

Ethiopian Opal
Opal is a multicolored precious gemstone formed by rainwater that deposits layers of silica into the cavities of underground rocks. Ethiopian opal specifically, has been available since its discovery in 1994. It is somewhat more translucent than its opaque Australian counterpart. I chose to use it in this design for its dazzling play of color when the light hits it from different angles. Opal is also a birthstone for the month of October.

About The Opulence Collection
All of the pieces in this collection are inspired by a larger piece that I created for the 2018 Artsthrive Exhibition and benefit at the Albuquerque Museum. I decided to make an entire series perpetuating a similar aesthetic, due to the original piece being met with such a great response. That one-of-a-kind piece is called “Opulence No. 1” and it can be seen on my Art Jewelry page.
The pieces have a light feel to them, and they are bright with color and contrast. Many of the stones I use in this collection are faceted. Consequently the pieces catch even more light and brightness.
